Dating Your Spouse When You Can’t Afford To

2

It is no secret my husband and I are in a loooott of debt after medical school, so we are always finding ways to be frugal during our debt-payoff journey. It’s actually kinda fun! But that’s for another post.

We meticulously budget via the envelope system, and after our humble envelope of date night money wasn’t getting us very far, we decided to get a little creative. Atmosphere alone is enough to make this girl happy, so we have a slight advantage on being frugal for date nights. Date nights don’t have to be extravagant but there’s something about being in a beautiful or buzzing place that makes it fun.

Here are some ideas we’ve come up with to take advantage of our beautiful Palm Beach County, while not spending like the “Palm Beachers” do.

Weekend Farmer’s Markets: There are SO many to choose from, check it out here on Edible Palm Beach. We try not to miss a chance to go to the Farmer’s Market! Not only can I actually find good deals, but just walking hand in hand with my love makes me happy. My favorite local market will always be the West Palm Beach Green Market, that happens right at the end of Clematis. COST $0 for the stroll

Scenic Drives: My girl sleeps quite well in her car seat. We take the scenic drive down Ocean Blvd and check out the Palm Beach mansions, wondering what on Earth do these people do for a living. We roll the windows down and open the sunroof and enjoy the salty air. We’ve also driven around the El Cid Historic District for some BEAUTIFUL scenery. And yes, sometimes date night includes the little one, to save on babysitting costs. COST $0

Walking Around Downtown Areas: Northwood Village, Downtown West Palm, Downtown Lake Worth,  and Atlantic Avenue are among a few places we’ve gone for a stroll. Sometimes we will pop into Kilwins for my favorite budget friendly treat: the rolled caramel for 99 cents right next to the register. COST $1.07 if you treat yo’self to that lovely caramel confection.

Norton Museum of Art: Did you know admission is FREE right now because they are doing a major overhaul? Don’t be discouraged though, because its still beautiful inside! COST $0

Movies on the Lawn: Blanket, Wine in a Yeti, two plastic cups, and were like little teenagers again. There are free movies in Downtown at the Gardens, Royal Palm Beach, Wellington and Downtown West Palm Beach. COST $0

Chopped Challenge: This one was out of desperation one night before our daughter was born. It was date night and our entertainment money was spent for the week. We got creative and raided the fridge. The rules were we could only use what we had, and had 30 min to create a masterpiece. It was funny and actually quite delicious! …and I won 😉 COST $0

Bible Study: We like to put our daughter to bed and go out on our porch that we don’t use so often and light a candle and get into the word together. Discussing it has a value much deeper than any other date night we do. COST $0

Groupon: I’m ending on this one, because as fairly new Palm Beach residents, it helps us discover new places locally and cheaper than it would normally be! It’s a no brainer and we love it. COST Varies

What budget date night ideas do you have? We would love to find out!

XO,
Andrea

  1. Now that summer is almost here and if you have a pool, we usually take out our baby monitor and go for a little swim and it ends up being a great night chatting and sipping on some soho cup wine under the stars.
