Hitting the Play Date Sweet Spot

1

Moms of young kids know the double-edged sword that is the park play date. You love them, because it’s a chance to get out of the house and let the kids work off some energy while you talk to a human being who will, in all likelihood, not ask you to tie their shoes or wipe their butt. At the same time, you loathe them. Just getting ready to take the kids for a morning at the park is like preparing the Fourth Infantry for a massive invasion. You need supplies, provisions, maps and contingency plans.

A Saturday morning play date at the park can be a sweet success, though, if you do it right.

First of all, a morning play date at the park is nothing short of impossible without coffee. I also think that making time to hang out with a mom friend is a cause for celebration, and what better way to celebrate than with a big, fluffy, fresh Jupiter Donut?

Jupiter Donuts is one of those local favorites that keeps you coming back for more.  It is not even possible for me to adequately describe the magic that is a Jupiter Donut. Those who have been, know. I truly think that heaven smells like a cross between a newborn baby and a Jupiter Donut.

I’ve also heard they have great breakfast sandwiches and bagels, but seriously, once I’m in the door, I can’t get past the 40 varieties of hand crafted donuts. FORTY! My personal favorite is the Red Velvet Chocolate Glazed. Paired with a steaming cup of their medium roast coffee, it’s a treat fit for a Saturday morning outing with a friend.  As long as said friend is not the type that would judge me for letting my kid eat an M&M speckled donut for breakfast…

After coffee and a super-food breakfast like this, the most important thing you can do for a successful park play date is to pick the right park.

One of my favorite parks for a morning play date is Constitution Park in Tequesta.  This hidden gem at the very northern border of Palm Beach County boasts two shaded playgrounds – one for the toddler set, and a much larger, more challenging one for the jungle gym savvy school-age kids.

Dozens of mature trees form a canopy over a paved trail around the park, bordered by a white picket fence, perfect for a peaceful stroll.

This lovely Key-West style building houses clean bathrooms.  Winning!

There are basketball courts and a skateboard park, in case you have an older child with you who is just too cool for the playground.   As for me, I love this shaded, grassy area in front of the gazebo.  It’s the perfect place for a picnic blanket and a good conversation.

Constitution Park is located at 399 Seabrook Road in Tequesta.  There are Jupiter Donuts locations sprouting up all around Palm Beach County, but the original is still humming along at 141 Center Street in Jupiter, just a short drive from Constitution Park.  Stop in and say hi, and tell them that the Palm Beach Moms Blog sent you.  Not that you’ll get anything free out of it… except maybe a smile.
