Does My Child Need Speech Therapy?

0

As moms we often compare our children to other children.  One area that we often do this is with speech development.  You might be asking yourself, would speech therapy be beneficial for my child?

Robin Best, M.A., C.C.C., P.A. a local speech language pathologist in our area breaks it down for us!

Below are 10 indications that your child may need speech therapy.

Parents should get their child “screened or assessed” for speech and language skills by a speech language pathologist when:

  1. Familiar and unfamiliar listeners have difficulty understanding their child.
  2. Your child isn’t saying words by 18 months to 2 years old and lack of babbling or vocal play was experienced.
  3. Your child doesn’t make eye contact or appears not to be listening.
  4. Your child’s voice quality seems chronically hoarse.
  5. Your child speaks too loudly or too softly.
  6. Your child doesn’t follow simple directions.
  7. Your child is having academic, social, or self esteem issues related to speech or language difficulties.
  8. Your child has difficulty expressing their thoughts or needs. This could be due to articulation issues, language issues, or fluency issues.
  9. Reading or writing is difficult due to phonological confusion which may be caused by auditory processes or an articulation disorder.
  10. Your child suffers from chronic ear infections or sinus infections or poor eating skills due to tongue, lip, jaw deficits or sensory input.

Robin specializes in speech-language pathology and hearing & speech therapy.  She provides screenings, diagnostic evaluations and treatments for a wide variety of speech and language disorders.

Robin has worked with all phonological (articulation) disorders ranging from lisps to complete breakdown of phonological systems and apraxia. Stuttering has been a particularly special area of expertise as well as language delays, disorders and language differences ( English as a second language). Hearing impairment as well as social language and pragmatic language are also areas of communication disorders that she has worked with. In addition, she continues to work with higher level autism spectrum disorders. Those are some of her areas of expertise but she has worked with most speech deficits in the 30+ years of her professional career.

Robin ran her own practice in Coral Springs, FL and has recently moved to the Northern Palm Beach County area.  She is available for speech therapy evaluations immediately.
