I grew up in an Italian household, and St. Patrick’s Day wasn’t a very big celebration in our house. But I always knew it was coming because my mom would go to the really good bakery near us and buy a loaf of Irish Soda Bread. It was so good.
Just like my mom, I celebrate every holiday with food. My husband is mostly Irish and this recipe is his Great Grandma’s from Ireland. This is the best Irish Soda Bread I’ve ever tasted and we look forward to it every year!
I recommend you eat it hot right out of the oven with slabs of salted butter and a hot cup of coffee. There is no other way…
Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

- 1 cup of sour cream
- 1 egg
- 1 stick of unsalted butter(1/2 cup), softened
- 3/4 cup of raisins
- 1 more egg to brush on the top before you bake
Directions:
- Preheat oven to bake 375 degrees (use convection if you have it)
- In a large bowl mix the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
- Add the buttermilk, sour cream, 1 egg, and butter.
- Mix well until combined.
- Add the raisins(use more if you like it sweeter)and mix them in.
- Place all the ingredients in a greased loaf pan.
- Make an X on the top with a knife.
- Beat the remaining egg with a drop of water.
- Brush it on the top.
- The original recipe says to bake for one hour. This will vary depending on the size of the pan you cook it in and your oven. It should be brown on the top when it is done. Check it after 40 minutes to see how it looks.
